How the natural gas volume to energy calculator works

Corrected volume is entered gas m³ multiplied by the supplied billing-volume factor. Energy in MJ is that corrected volume multiplied by the matching supplier MJ/m³ coefficient. Dividing by 3.6 gives kWh. Therm output is explicitly 100,000 International Table Btu, not the distinct U.S. therm convention.

The multiplier is applied exactly once. If the entered volume is already corrected to the supplier reference state, use a factor of 1. The heating-basis choice records gross/higher or net/lower convention; it does not recalculate the supplied heat value. Volume conditions, coefficient and multiplier must describe one consistent billing basis.

The tool does not infer standard temperature, pressure, compressibility, calorific value or a tariff from a location or gas name. It supplies no universal gas coefficient and no pressure-system or fuel-handling advice. Confirm supplier measurement and energy conventions before comparing bills.

Worked example

1,000 m³ with billing factor 1 and supplied heat content 36 MJ/m³ gives 36,000 MJ or 10,000 kWh. With factor 1.02, corrected volume is 1,020 m³ and energy is 36,720 MJ or 10,200 kWh. The 36 MJ/m³ value is illustrative rather than a universal gas property.

Sources and assumptions

The source material explains the underlying calculation or pricing structure. Entered prices, costs, schedules and scenario choices are your assumptions; this tool does not obtain supplier quotes or predict actual results.
