How the fuel volume to energy calculator works

Volume options convert to litres using 1 m³ = 1,000 L and one U.S. liquid gallon = 3.785411784 L. Input energy is the converted litres multiplied by the supplied kWh per litre. Megajoules are input kWh multiplied by 3.6. The coefficient remains the user input rather than a fuel-name lookup.

The higher/gross or lower/net selection records the declared basis and does not change the entered coefficient. Use the coefficient appropriate to that basis and to the volume temperature, composition and measurement conditions. Switching volume units changes the meaning of the entered number; it does not automatically convert the form value.

Fuel input energy is distinct from useful heat, generated electricity and equipment efficiency. Fuel-specific heat content varies. No temperature compensation, density, mass, commercial settlement or safe fuel-handling instruction is provided.

Worked example

One hundred litres at an entered 10 kWh/L contains 1,000 input kWh or 3,600 MJ. Changing the volume to 200 L doubles those values to 2,000 kWh and 7,200 MJ. Selecting U.S. gallons uses the declared gallon-to-litre factor with the same per-litre heat content.
