Conserve dry matter for water removal, then apply a separately based handling deduction.

How the grain moisture shrink calculator works
Initial dry matter is original wet mass times one minus initial wet-basis moisture fraction. Water-only mass at target moisture equals that dry matter divided by one minus target moisture fraction. Target moisture cannot exceed initial moisture and neither can be 100%.
Water removed is original mass less theoretical target-moisture mass. Additional handling deduction is the entered percentage of ORIGINAL wet mass, subtracted afterward. A deduction exceeding the theoretical dried mass is rejected. This declared bulk-mass allowance is separate from the dry-matter-conserving water calculation.
Total shrink percentage uses the original wet mass denominator and is unavailable at zero mass. This does not reproduce a buyer’s commercial shrink schedule or recommend drying, storage moisture, handling practice or grade. Actual handling loss and settlement conventions need their own evidence.
Worked example
17 tonnes at 20% moisture contain 13.6 tonnes of dry matter. At 15% target moisture, that corresponds to 16 tonnes before handling, so one tonne of water is removed. A 1% deduction on the original 17 tonnes removes another 0.17 tonne, leaving 15.83 tonnes. With zero handling deduction, 16 tonnes remain.
