How the wastewater mass loading calculator works
Daily constituent mass in kg/day = flow in m³/day × concentration in mg/L × 0.001. The factor converts cubic meters to liters and milligrams to kilograms. This is a mass rate for the constituent measured by the concentration, not the total liquid mass.
Period mass equals that daily rate multiplied by the entered duration. Metric tonnes equal kilograms divided by 1,000. Period liquid volume equals daily flow multiplied by days. Zero concentration or flow gives zero load, and a zero duration gives zero period totals while retaining the daily rate.
A product of separately averaged flow and concentration can misstate actual loading when those values vary together. Use matched time intervals and sum interval loads for variable data. The scenario does not implement permit-specific averaging, sample validity, censored laboratory values, discharge limits or compliance reporting rules.
Worked example
1,000 m³/day at 250 mg/L corresponds to 250 kg/day. Thirty identical days give 7,500 kg, or 7.5 metric tonnes, in 30,000 m³ of liquid. Changing flow to 2,000 m³/day doubles the daily constituent rate to 500 kg/day.
