How the transport fuel cost calculator works
Enter distance for one complete trip in kilometres and expected consumption in litres per 100 kilometres. Fuel per trip = distance × consumption ÷ 100. Include the return leg when it is part of the same trip. All modeled trips use the same distance, fuel consumption, price and other fixed cost.
Fuel cost per trip is litres × price per litre, rounded half-up to cents. The entered other-trip charge rounds separately, then those two amounts form total trip cost. Batch cost = rounded total trip cost × whole trip count. Batch fuel = unrounded litres per trip × trip count; money rounding does not alter fuel quantity.
The other fixed trip charge applies whenever a trip occurs, including a zero-kilometre trip. Zero entered trips means zero batch cost and fuel, while the per-trip metrics still describe one hypothetical trip. Cost per kilometre divides rounded total trip cost, including the entered fixed charge, by trip distance; it is undefined at zero distance.
Consumption ratings are a reference, not a prediction of the actual route. Use suitable assumptions for load, driving and conditions. The scenario table shows one, the entered count and twice that count without duplicate rows. No MPG conversion, price feed, tax, vehicle depreciation, financing, maintenance, wages or tolls are added unless represented in your entered costs.
Worked example
A 300 km trip at 9 L/100 km uses 27 L. At an illustrative 1.60 per litre, fuel costs 43.20. Adding 25 other trip cost gives 68.20 per trip. Four identical trips use 108 L and cost 272.80 in the selected currency. At zero kilometres the entered other-trip charge still applies; at zero trips the batch cost and litres are zero.
