How the promotion discount & required volume calculator works

Discounted price is regular price times one minus the discount percentage. Subtract unchanged variable cost to get promotional contribution per unit. Baseline contribution is original units times regular price less unit cost.

The sufficient whole-unit volume is the ceiling of baseline contribution plus fixed promotion cost, divided by promotional contribution per unit. It uses unrounded unit economics and can be conservative after monetary display rounding. Nonpositive promotional contribution cannot meet a positive requirement.

The expected-volume scenario deducts promotion cost once and compares with baseline contribution. Fixed operating overhead is unchanged and excluded from both sides. No demand elasticity, repeat purchase, customer mix or actual volume response is predicted.

Worked example

A $100 regular price and $60 variable cost contribute $40 on each of 1,000 baseline units, or $40,000. A 10% discount leaves $30 contribution per unit. Including $2,000 promotion cost requires 1,400 units to preserve baseline contribution. At 1,500 promotional units, contribution after promotion cost is $43,000, or $3,000 above baseline.
