How the crop input cost per acre calculator works

Required input kilograms = treated acres × your entered kilograms per acre. Whole bags to buy = ceil(required kilograms ÷ positive kilograms per bag). Purchased kilograms = whole bags × bag size. The rate and product are supplied by you; neither is prescribed by the tool.

Material cost = whole bags × quote per bag, rounded half-up to cents. Application cost = treated acres × application charge per acre, also rounded separately. One entered delivery fee rounds separately. The total sums these rounded components.

Application and delivery are charged only when there is a positive bag purchase. Zero acres or zero input mass rate yields zero purchases and associated charges. Cost per acre divides the rounded total by treated acres and rounds to cents; it is undefined at zero acres.

This covers one input, not all crop production costs. It excludes agronomic selection, chemical restrictions, application timing, efficacy, yield effects, machinery ownership, labor beyond the entered application charge and taxes. Iowa State’s enterprise budgeting material provides cost-planning context; its published rates or budgets are not automatically used here.

Worked example

100 acres at an entered 10 kg/acre requires 1,000 kg. A 25 kg bag size means 40 bags. At an illustrative 62.50/bag, material is 2,500. Application at 12/acre adds 1,200 and delivery adds 50: total 3,750, or 37.50/acre. At 50 acres, total becomes 1,900, or 38/acre because the same delivery fee covers fewer acres.
