How the payment fee plan comparison calculator works
For each average-sized transaction, add the percentage charge and fixed transaction fee. Apply the entered minimum fee, then any nonzero cap. Round that combined transaction fee half-up to cents. Multiply by whole transactions and add the fixed monthly plan charge.
Fee per transaction = min(nonzero cap, max(minimum, amount × percentage ÷ 100 + fixed fee)). Monthly fees = transactions × fee per transaction + monthly plan charge. Net receipts = gross sales − monthly fees; negative net receipts remain visible when a monthly charge exceeds sales.
The crossover is the nonnegative intersection of the two monthly cost lines at this same average ticket: (B monthly charge − A monthly charge) ÷ (A per-transaction fee − B per-transaction fee). It may fall between whole transactions. Equal per-transaction fees produce no unique crossover. This is not a promise that a plan becomes cheaper at a rounded display value.
This model assumes identical average-sized successful transactions and one simple fee schedule. When fees have caps or minimums, the average of actual fees can differ from the fee on the average sale. Refunds, disputes, taxes, currency conversion, card mix, minimum monthly processing charges and tiered pricing are excluded. Check whether a supplier cap applies to the complete fee or only one component before entering it here.
Worked example
At 100 transactions of $100 each, illustrative Plan A charges 2.9% plus $0.30, with no monthly charge: $3.20 per transaction and $320 per month. Plan B charges 2.6% plus $0.10 and $20 monthly: $2.70 per transaction and $290 monthly. B costs $30 less at this volume. The cost lines meet at 40 transactions, where both cost $128. These are fictional plan terms, not current processor prices.
