How the profit & margin bridge calculator works

Modeled period profit = revenue − variable costs − fixed costs. Margin is that profit divided by period revenue. Both periods must use the same scope, currency and cost classification.

The bridge adds revenue change, baseline variable cost less comparison variable cost, and baseline fixed cost less comparison fixed cost. Those contributions reconcile to profit change before display rounding. Margin movement is in percentage points, not percentage growth.

Losses are retained and zero revenue makes the associated margin undefined. This arithmetic bridge does not isolate price, volume, product mix or causal drivers, and does not restate financial statements, taxes or exceptional accounting items.

Worked example

Baseline revenue 100,000 less 60,000 variable and 25,000 fixed costs gives 15,000 profit. Comparison revenue 110,000 less 65,000 variable and 26,000 fixed costs gives 19,000. The bridge is +10,000 revenue −5,000 variable-cost effect −1,000 fixed-cost effect = +4,000 profit. Margins move from 15% to approximately 17.273%.
