How the metal order cost by weight calculator works
For a positive order, billable mass is the greater of physical mass and minimum billable mass. Material charge is the greater of billable mass × unit price and minimum material charge. Cutting charge is cut count × cut fee. Freight applies once. Each cost component rounds before totals are summed.
A billing minimum does not increase physical delivered mass. Zero physical mass suppresses the entire order and charges in this model. Enter the actual quote terms, including whether cuts or freight are already included elsewhere. No material grade, market price, supplier availability or safe handling rating is retrieved.
Quantities use the stated units and finite bounded inputs. Whole purchases round up under the documented model; cost components round half-up to cents before totals are summed. Undefined ratios stay unavailable. π and logarithms use normal numeric precision. Display rounding does not alter the entered assumptions.
Worked example
100 kg ordered with a 120 kg billing minimum at 3/kg costs 360 material. Four cuts at 2 add 8 and freight adds 50: total 418. Increasing physical mass to 200 kg makes total 658.
