How the condensate return savings scenario calculator works

The thermal difference is returned mass × (return enthalpy − makeup enthalpy), converted from kJ to kWh. Enthalpies must use a common reference and appropriate reviewed states. Dividing by the entered output/input boiler efficiency gives the equivalent fuel-input difference. Negative differences remain negative rather than being described as recovered heat.

Avoided fuel cost applies the supplied price per input kWh. Avoided makeup-water volume is returned mass divided by entered water density, valued at the combined water/treatment rate. Those two currency components round separately before added return operating cost is subtracted. The model assumes the stated mass actually replaces makeup water.

There is no property table, contamination assessment, steam-quality analysis, return-permission determination or pressure-system design. It does not establish that a condensate stream is suitable to return. Review the quality, state, losses and recovery boundary separately before using the cost scenario.

Worked example

Returning 10,000 kg at enthalpy 420 instead of makeup at 84 kJ/kg represents 933.333 thermal kWh. At 80% efficiency it corresponds to 1,166.667 input kWh, valued at 116.67 at rate 0.10. Density 1,000 kg/m³ gives 10 m³ makeup avoided, worth 20 at rate 2. Less 10 operating cost, net scenario saving is 126.67. With no operating cost it is 136.67.
